      A study has been made of the mineralogical composition of South African fly ashes using X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Depending on the source, the ash consists of a Si-Al-Ca-rich glassy phase between 24-75 wt% and the following mineral phases: mullite (3Al//2O//3. 2SiO//2) at 16-49 wt%, quartz (SiO//2) at 2, 7-26 wt%, maghemite ( gamma -Fe//2O//3) and hematite ( beta -Fe//2O//3) at 2, 5-8, 5 wt% and lime (CaO) and portlandite (Ca(OH)//2) at 0. 3-2. 9 wt%. The minerals were quantified with XRD, using a spiking technique to determine standard lines, and the glassy phase was determined by subtraction. [1]
