Abstract
Poly(styrene-co-butyl acrylate) latexes were successfully synthesized via Pickering miniemulsion polymerization, using modified Montmorillonite clay as the exclusive stabilizer. The latexes were stable to relatively high concentration of electrolyte due to the presence of the clay at the interface, providing both a physical barrier and electrostatic stabilization. Film formation could be done at room temperature, but the barrier properties to water and oil were poor. This was attributed to compartmentalization of the film, where the morphology of the latex particles was retained. Copyright © 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim.
