Human tumor microsporidiosis. First reported case
Infection of human tumor cells by Microsporidia has not been documented to date. A description is given of microsporidian parasites seen as an incidental finding in the cytoplasm of the cells of a widely disseminated pancreatic adenocarcinoma in a 58 yr old man. This previously unreported phenomenon in a human has its counterpart in the well documented parasitism of malignant tumor cells in common laboratory animals by the microsporidian Nosema cuniculi.
