From ownership to access : the economic impacts for business

ENGLISH SUMMARY : This study explores the developing trend whereby more and more people prefer to have access to products in stead of owning them, and specifically how it impacts on businesses and the economy. The trend is intricately entwined with the ideas of collaborative consumption and the shared economy, and the central idea is that people will increasingly prefer to rent, share, subscribe, or borrow products in stead of buying and owning them. The history and philosophy of ownership in a Western context are explored. Current developments that influence the movement towards access rather than ownership are analysed. Finally, the impacts on business‘ internal, transactional and contextual environment are analysed.
